PBS CELEBRATED MLK DAY, WITH THE LATE MAYA ANGELOU.
Distinctly referred to as "a redwood tree, with deep roots in American culture," Dr. Maya Angelou (April 4, 1928-May 28, 2014) led a prolific life. As a singer, dancer, activist, poet and writer, she inspired generations with lyrical modern African-American thought that pushed boundaries. Best known for her autobiography I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (Random House), she gave people the freedom to think about their history in a way they never had before. The first feature documentary about her life, American Masters – Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise, premieres nationwide Tuesday, February 21 at 8 p.m. on PBS (check local listings) during Black History Month as part of the 31stseason of THIRTEEN's American Masters series. PBS Distribution will release the film on DVD the same day, with additional bonus features, and on Digital HD February 22.
With unprecedented access, filmmakers Bob Hercules and Rita Coburn Whack trace Dr. Angelou's incredible journey, shedding light on the untold aspects of her life through never-before-seen footage, rare archival photographs and videos and her own words. From her upbringing in the Depression-era South and her early performing career (1957's Miss Calypso album and Calypso Heat Wave film, Jean Genet's 1961 play The Blacks) to her work with Malcolm X in Ghana and her many writing successes, including her inaugural poem for President Bill Clinton, American Masters – Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise reveals hidden facets of her life during some of America's most defining moments. The film also features exclusive interviews with Dr. Angelou, her friends and family, including Clinton, Oprah Winfrey, Common, Alfre Woodard, Cicely Tyson, Quincy Jones, Hillary Clinton, Louis Gossett, Jr., John Singleton, Diahann Carroll, Valerie Simpson, Random House editor Bob Loomis and Dr. Angelou's son, Guy Johnson.
"It was a unique privilege to be the first filmmakers to tell Dr. Angelou's full story and exciting to uncover stories that most people hadn't heard," said co-director and co-producer Bob Hercules (American Masters – Joffrey: Mavericks of American Dance, American Masters – Bill T. Jones: A Good Man, Forgiving Dr. Mengele).
"The film reflects on how the events of history, culture and the arts shaped Dr. Angelou's life, and how she, in turn, helped shape our own worldview through her autobiographical literature and activism," said co-director and co-producer Rita Coburn Whack (Curators of Culture, Remembering 47th Street, African Roots American Soil).
"It is bittersweet that Dr. Angelou takes her rightful place in the American Masters series posthumously," said executive producer Michael Kantor. "We are fortunate that Bob and Rita captured these insightful interviews with her just prior to her death so we can all learn from her wisdom firsthand."
Today, American Masters launches a year-long online campaign, #InspiringWomanPBS, based on themes central to Dr. Angelou's life: artistic expression, academic success, active community engagement and acceptance of difference. People can share stories of inspirational women in their own lives via text, images or videos on the American Masters website (http://pbs.org/americanmasters) or via Tumblr, Twitter and Instagram using the hashtag #InspiringWomanPBS.
A video compilation series of the best submissions will be featured on PBS' Instagram Stories and Snapchat channels throughout the year. Additionally, previously unreleased videos from Maya Angelou: And Still I Riseand In Their Own Words: The American Masters Digital Archive will be released as part of the campaign, as well as new episodes of the American Masters Podcast.
WNET Education will work with local PBS stations and local arts organizations across the country to engage diverse audiences in the campaign through a series of free, community-based screening events. They will also create educational resources based on the film for PBS LearningMedia. Funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, #InspiringWomanPBS is the latest example of American Masters and WNET's commitment to educate and entertain audiences beyond broadcast.
Launched in 1986, American Masters has earned 28 Emmy Awards — including 10 for Outstanding Non-Fiction Series and five for Outstanding Non-Fiction Special — 12 Peabodys, an Oscar, three Grammys, two Producers Guild Awards and many other honors. The series' 31st season on PBS features new documentaries about Patsy Cline (March), Chef James Beard (May 19) and Chef Jacques Pépin (May 26). American Masters is a production of THIRTEEN PRODUCTIONS LLC for WNET and also seen on the WORLD channel.
American Masters – Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise is a co-production of The People's Poet Media Group, LLC, THIRTEEN's American Masters for WNET, and ITVS in association with Artemis Rising. Bob Hercules and Rita Coburn Whack are directors. David E. Simpson and Lillian E. Benson are editors. Keith Walker is director of photography, with original music by Stephen James Taylor. BE A VR NINJA OF GOOD, IN NEW VIDEO GAME.
Mixed Realms, Singapore has announced the early access release of its first game on Steam, 'Sairento VR' - a mission-driven, first-person hybrid shooter and sword fighting VR role-playing game set in a reimagined future Japan.
Within 4 days of its release Sairento VR has garnered more than a thousand purchases and received a 98% positive rating. Aldric Chang - CEO of Mixed Realms – remarked, "We are very heartened with the positive response we are getting from the international gaming community. We wanted to give players the epic experience of taking down enemies like they are the heroes of a movie. And I think we did it."
Moving forward, Mixed Realms will continue to work hard on improving Sairento VR based on the feedback of its early customers. Players can look forward to the full release version of the game complete with a storyline, more levels, more enemy types, improved graphics and game play around the third quarter of 2017.

STAND UP TO CANCER WITH MORGAN FREEMAN.
The PSA is part of a collaboration between SU2C and Genentech called Be The BreakthroughTM, a multi-faceted effort that celebrates the people behind progress in cancer: the patients who participate in clinical trials, the scientists and doctors who make medical advances and improve care, and the people who provide support to those living with cancer.
While we have made significant progress, there is much left to do to fight cancer. The disease still affects 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women in the U.S. in their lifetime. The Be The Breakthrough TM PSA is designed to increase awareness of and educate about the critical importance of individual contributions, such as getting screened regularly and participating in clinical trials, to continue advancing progress against cancer.
"I am honored to join Stand Up To Cancer and Genentech in this extremely important PSA campaign," said Academy Award®-winning actor Freeman. "As the executive producer of The C Word documentary, it's important to me to help raise awareness of this disease and the progress being made. I hope through this PSA and also through The C Word that I can help change the way people view cancer."
The PSA will begin airing December 2016 and encourages the public to visit SU2C.org/breakthrough. The website will provide resources and tools for people who want to learn about screening tests and clinical trials that may be right for them.
Freeman adds: "Even the smallest steps against cancer are breakthroughs and can lead to something extraordinary. Getting screened, participating in a clinical trial, caring for patients, teaching prevention or pursuing an uncharted area of research — these are all breakthroughs. Defeating cancer takes breakthroughs, and together we can all be the breakthrough."
In the PSA, Freeman, standing on a dramatically lit stage alongside cancer survivor Tonya Peat, delivers an inspiring and poetic monologue about what it means to "be the breakthrough." Tonya represents all the brave survivors who fight tirelessly.
The PSA was developed by the Creative Direction team of Nate Naylor and Chris Maiorino, and produced by the teams at Blacklist and Tendril, and Executive Produced by Madeline Marotto.
In addition to Be The Breakthrough TM, Genentech is also a collaborator in Catalyst, a program that will use funding and materials from the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, diagnostic and medical devices industries to accelerate research on cancer prevention, detection and treatment.
"We are grateful to Genentech for their continued dedication to Stand Up To Cancer's research and their commitment to discovering science breakthroughs to help saves lives," said Stand Up To Cancer Co-Founder Lisa Paulsen. "We are also grateful to Morgan Freeman for lending his voice to this campaign. His dedication to raising awareness for this disease through his participation in this PSA and through his documentary The C Word, makes him such a powerful ambassador."
"SU2C has made great progress against cancer by combining awareness, public education and cutting-edge research, which is why we've deepened our collaboration with them to include 'Be The Breakthrough,'" said Troy Cox, Senior Vice President of BioOncology at Genentech. "We are excited to have Morgan Freeman bring his voice and advocacy to this public health initiative that empowers everyone to play a role in the fight against cancer."
